Standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may consist of a regimen of birth control pills, oral estrogen replacement, or vaginal estrogens. These therapies require a physician’s prescription and are variably designed to increase the circulating levels of estrogen within the body. Many treatment regimens have been studied extensively and have been shown to help women with the symptoms of menopause. However, these treatments also have been shown to have serious, and potentially fatal, side effects. Some of these serious side effects include breast cancer, uterine cancer, cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes), hypertension, and blood clots. For this reason, many physicians and their patients are concerned about the safety of standard hormone replacement therapy. |
