Alternative Therapies for Menopause
<< back to menopause treatment main menu

Alternative therapies for menopause have existed for years and many have predated Western medicine by centuries, such as foods, herbal supplements, acupuncture, and skin creams. Some foods, such as soy products, have been touted as beneficial because of their phytoestrogen content. Phytoestrogens are the natural estrogens present in plants. These plant estrogens are not as strong as the estrogen a woman’s body produces. Because naturally occurring phytoestrogens are weak, the amount of such foods that must be eaten or taken as an oral supplement is very large and can become impractical.

Herbal supplements such as black cohosh, soy products and wild yam are used routinely for the treatment of a variety of menopausal symptoms. Studies have shown that even small increases in dietary phytoestrogens may have some effect on hot flashes, but not on the other symptoms of menopause. Of the herbal products that exist on the market today, there is no standard dose, and poor quality control has allowed unreliable product to be sold to the consumer.

Regardless of the difficulties with proper dosages, the method of delivering the phytoestrogen to the female organs is very important. A very large dose must be taken orally to achieve the desired concentration in the pelvis due to the body’s normal inability to absorb estrogens and phytoestrogens from the stomach and digestive system. Oral supplements also deliver the same dose of phytoestrogen throughout the body, even in areas where it is not needed and may even be harmful, such as the breasts. The use of skin creams may also be unreliable since the amount applied may vary and the creams may accidentally be removed before they are completely absorbed.

Behavioral modification and stress management may help in treating some of the symptoms of menopause. Yoga may assist with general relaxation and stress relief as well as increasing muscle tone and general strength. In addition, acupuncture has been used very successfully throughout history in Eastern medicine and has been beneficial for the treatment of many menopausal symptoms in some women.
